Myanmar and Bangladesh must solve border tensions peacefully - Newssails

Many Rohingya fled Myanmar a few years ago in fear of their lives, but the army lately faced opposition from other independence-seeking militants. The military is also in war with the Cochin Army, the Shan, Karen, Mong, Shin, and Kaya.

The Tatmadaw (military) has taken a somewhat different method from its Rohingya persecution to escape international scrutiny. It has undertaken a campaign on the border with Bangladesh.

Myanmar has fired mortars. Tatmadaw intends to pressure surviving Rohingya to leave for Bangladesh or abroad. It expects Bangladesh would join its war against insurgents. This increases Rohingya persecution.

The Myanmar army is illegally planting landmines in border regions. Previously, mines killed Rohingya, but today they kill Bangladeshis. Myanmar violates international conventions by stationing troops on the border without a declaration of war.

Tatmadaw has breached Bangladesh's airspace. As in the past, the Myanmar regime is brazenly violating international conventions.

Border disputes

Bangladeshi law enforcement is on alert at the border and monitoring the situation.

Myanmar's land and marine border with Bangladesh is 271 km. Teknaf and Ukhia, two Bangladeshi subdistricts bordering Myanmar, have 1.2 million Rohingya.

Bangladesh should avoid the Myanmar border confrontation. Both the Tatmadaw and Arakan Army would gain. Bangladesh should seek a peaceful settlement.

In Bandarban, Myanmar is fighting the Arakan Army across the Naikshyongchari border. Bangladesh is now being bombarded. Helicopters enter Bangladesh's airspace.

Border tensions worry Bangladesh. Myanmar isn't attacking Bangladesh. The Arakan Army is targeting Tatmadaw military installations near the border. The Myanmar army is undertaking an operation near the Bangladesh border.

Border tensions have persisted for a while. Tension fluctuates. Shelling and airspace violations have increased. The Arakan Army is more active. Tatmadaw has undertaken a big operation.

Myanmar's troops will violate Bangladesh's border more in coming days. Showing Bangladesh's authority can decrease boundary transgressions. As Myanmar's soldiers can't see Bangladesh's military and national might, they don't care.

Bangladesh should seek a peaceful settlement. Four times, Bangladesh called Myanmar's ambassador. But diplomatic language needs power.

More Rohingya entering Bangladesh is a major problem. Myanmar's army doesn't just operate in Rohingya. Under campaign pressure, other Rakhine ethnic groups may enter Bangladesh. Myanmarans entered India's Mizoram.

Bangladesh shouldn't intervene in Myanmar's troubles. Bangladesh enhanced BGP and Coast Guard deployments. Bangladesh shouldn't deploy the army to the border now.

Sheikh Hasina will address the UN General Assembly on Friday. She'll mention it. She should also meet with Xi Jinping in New York.

Sergey Lavrov, not Vladimir Putin, will attend the UN. Bangladeshi FM A K Abdul Momen should meet him at the UNGA.

According to foreign media, Myanmar rebels allege the army doesn't control 52% of Rakhine state. The Arakan Army war has taken form.

Myanmar hasn't followed international law or diplomacy before. Myanmar's internal problems should be dealt within, not externally. Bangladesh must globalize this issue.

Dhaka University's International Relations Professor Imtiaz Ahmed stated the issue has to be internationalized.

Myanmar's military can't respond simply if Bangladesh combines military might and diplomacy. Bangladesh must engage Myanmar diplomatically.

Except for the lowlands, the Myanmar military has minimal authority over isolated mountainous areas. The junta leadership predicts that next year's elections would be challenging due to rising unrest.

Sheikh Hasina recently stated Bangladesh is being restrained near Myanmar. Labour Party leader Keir Starmer visited Hasina in London on Saturday. She told him about Bangladesh's mounting burden from Myanmar's Rohingya.

Starmer reviewed the current escalation of military violence with Sheikh Hasina.

She said Bangladesh is showing greatest restraint despite the Myanmar crisis spilling to its territory.

Bangladeshi Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan conducted a high-level conference Wednesday to review the Myanmar border situation.

After the discussion, the minister said Bangladesh's army and other forces were ready to protect the nation.

He remarked, "We've seen several provocations." Bangladesh has no involvement as long as the Arakan Army is battling [Myanmar's military forces].

Bangladesh Army Chief General S M Shafiuddin Ahmed said his forces were ready to attack Myanmar if required.

Foreigners

Bangladesh has avoided Myanmar's trap thus far. Conflict should be avoided. Dhaka should boost pressure on Naypyidaw by engaging China, India, and ASEAN members.

In this way, ASEAN will be the future victim of this dispute. Nobody wants war. Bangladesh's diplomatic and military preparedness require improvement.

Diplomacy has stages. Regional powers are involved. They can stop the war. They're not interested. Bangladesh must boost diplomatic efforts.

Traditional and military diplomacy can reduce tensions. In that instance, demonstrating military power without becoming engaged can warn Myanmar.

In this circumstance, be cautious. All elements, including Rohingya, national security, and economic stability, must be examined.
